Location: Washington, DC

U.S. News & World Report is looking for freelance writers/photographers to help create content for the Best Places to Live rankings product. U.S. News has earned a reputation as the leading provider of news and information that helps consumers make decisions, including Best Colleges, Best Hospitals, Best Diets and, soon, Best Places to Live. This unique ranking will leverage U.S. News’ renowned data and couple it with high-quality to provide potential new residents with the insights they need to make an informed decision on where to move – be it to a new city or a new neighborhood.

The people we hire will be responsible for producing in-depth guides to the metro areas in which they live, providing readers with information they need to decide whether or not a given metro is the right place for them to settle down. In addition to the written profiles, we expect freelancers to submit original photos and video footage of the metro area.

Our ideal candidates are strong writers who feel comfortable and confident with a camera. They should also know the ins and outs of their hometowns – and if not, they should be ready to learn.

  • We are looking for writers/photographers who reside in the cities listed below
  • Strong writing and editing skills — you should be capable of being both writer and copy editor, able to produce clean copy devoid of spelling errors, factual inconsistencies and grammatical issues
  • Proficiency in AP style required
  • Ability to work on deadlines
  • Strong photography skills – you don’t need to be a professional, but you should own your own camera (it doesn’t have to be a DSLR; point-and-shoots are OK) and be able to shoot straight and identify capture-worthy scenes.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

This is a telecommuting position with compensation awarded on a per-submission basis. Our rate per profile – including photos – is $250.

Applicants must provide a résumé and a cover letter. We would also like applicants send some examples of their photography (two or three photos as attachments or a link to a portfolio will suffice) and to complete a writing test: Please submit a 150-word description of their metro area and why someone would want to live there.
